Designing Digital Health for All Ages
We love a sleek interface and clean code as much as the next dev team, but if your 76-year-old relative uncle can’t figure out how to log in, we’ve got a problem.
As digital health platforms become the backbone of care delivery, inclusivity is no longer optional. Especially when it comes to older adults, who often have the greatest need for these tools. Whether it's managing medications, tracking vitals, or participating in a remote study, we need platforms that meet all users where they are, tech-savvy or not.
At Health Studio, we’re obsessed with designing health tech that works for everyone, from digital natives to digital skeptics.
The Usability Gap in Senior Care
Most health apps aren’t built with seniors in mind. Small fonts, complex navigation, jargon-filled dashboards… it’s no wonder older adults often feel left behind by digital care tools.
But here’s the kicker: nearly 80% of adults aged 65+ have at least one chronic condition and they’re one of the fastest-growing user groups in healthcare. So why aren’t we designing for them?
Poor usability isn’t just inconvenient, it leads to non-adherence, missed data collection, and disengagement in clinical programs. In public health, it can mean the difference between care and confusion.
Designing with Empathy: What Seniors Really Need
Building senior-friendly UX starts with rethinking how we approach simplicity and accessibility:
- Large, legible fonts and high-contrast color schemes
- Clear, plain-language instructions (no tech jargon or nested menus)
- Frictionless onboarding (ideally with caregiver support features)
- Alternative input options (like voice, SMS, or even paper for hybrid use)
- Feedback loops that show users their actions matter, no more "black box" interfaces
And let’s not forget: seniors aren’t one-size-fits-all. Some are tech-savvy, some are not. Some have dexterity issues, others don’t. Our job is to create digital tools that adapt, not the other way around.
How Health Studio Builds for All Generations
Our platform was designed to be modular, mobile-first, and inclusive from day one. For senior-facing use cases, like the ReVibe project at ASU, focused on cognitive decline and remote monitoring, we tailor every touchpoint:
- SMS-based daily check-ins for ease of participation
- Simple wearable integrations (like Fitbit) with no manual syncing
- Caregiver dashboards that allow family or clinicians to help when needed
- Accessible survey design with visual cues and voice-over compatibility
Because when it comes to health, everyone deserves a seat at the table, even if they need bigger buttons to get there.
It’s Not Just UX. It’s Human-Centered Healthcare.
Design isn’t just about making things look good. It’s about making them work better, especially for the people who need them most.
By building age-inclusive, patient-first platforms, we not only improve outcomes we increase engagement, equity, and trust.
